Local Femme Osage History:
The beautiful
rolling hills of Missouri Wine County reminded the
German immigrants of the rich and fertile fatherland
like it was in the early to mid 1860's
Femme Osage, Augusta
and Dutzow are just a few of the first areas settled
by the hardly German pioneers. Continue up the Missouri
River, you'll find the towns Washington, New Haven
and Herman as well.
This area is filled
with wonderful historic cemeteries, Churches and numerous
historical societies; all of which are open to those
who wish to trace their ancestry. For genealogists
looking for their German roots, this truly is a great
place to visit.
Prior to the German
migration the area was home to the Osage Indians,
as well as other Indian nations and French trappers.
When the area
was under Spanish rule, a land grant was awarded to
American folk hero, Daniel Boone.
Boone was already
in his later years, but brought his family from Kentucky
and made his personal home here near the town of Defiance.
The district for
voting called "Femme Osage Township" is
original and was the area which Daniel Boone supervised
as a "Syndic", or Justice.
Similar to a "Justice
of the Peace" in those early years, Boone was
called on to settle small disputes between the early
settlers. These disputes were usually sorted out under
the huge oak "Judgment Tree" located on
the Boone property (unfortunately no longer standing.)
In addition to
the historic Boone Home, is the Boone Monument in
Marthasville where both Daniel and Rebecca Boone were
laid to rest.
For those biking
on the Katy Trail, the Boone Monument is a wonderful
pace to stop and take a break and learn about early
American history.
